Underwriting can be overwhelming and convoluted.
Here at IAMS, we know that the clients you protect have their own unique histories that often present Underwriting challenges. With so many options available, knowing where to start can be daunting. Let IAMS remove the mystery and help you choose the right carrier the first time. Contact Andrea the next time you’ve “got a guy” that you’re not quite sure where to start with, and stop declines before they happen. You might just be surprised at what she’ll find…
The Challenge:
Male, 17, NS
The proposed insured was diagnosed with high-functioning autism at the age of 3. The young man’s IQ is unknown; however, he is a full-time high school student demonstrating adequate vocal, communication, and reading skills and is performing at a normal grade level. Physically, he has complete functionality of all limbs, has no difficulties with ADLs, and has no history of Epilepsy. According to the client’s Physician, there is no history of any other medical impairments, behavioral issues, or psychiatric concerns.
The Solution:
We had a handful of carriers that outright declined this client based on the Autism diagnosis alone. We also had multiple carriers that indicated this would be to postpone until the client was at least 18 years of age, at which point they would require Intelligence testing and behavioral assessments.
While many of the carriers preferred to wait until the client was old enough to live independently and manage his own affairs, we were able to identify numerous carriers that were willing to offer now, in the table 2-4 range. We even had a few that came back as favorable as standard—showing once again that no two carriers, or their underwriting, are created equal.
